A lionfish removal in Akamas and an important observation in the Kakoskali MPA
October 24, 2021Catching lionfish for consumption
November 3, 2021The RELIONMED-Life project invites you to its 8th and final lionfish removal derby that will be held on the 7th of November 2021 in Konnos Bay. The monthly removals and the eight lionfish removal derbies implemented through the project, with the great support of the project’s “Removal Action Teams (RATs)”, aimed to control the abundance and distribution of the alien and invasive lionfish in Cyprus marine waters. Through these events, the project was also able to promote lionfish consumption and the creation/purchase of lionfish jewellery as ways to make removals economically sustainable in the future to be able to continue to control the populations of this species even after the completion of the project.
For more information on the derby, check out the “University of Cyprus”
press release and the
invitation to the derby. The project’s RATs who wish to compete (only scuba divers) must register prior to the derby via the
online form.
A big thank you to all those who volunteered and supported the project during these events. RELIONMED’s partners are looking forward to seeing everyone at the final derby!
