JEWELLERY & ART
A smart gift from the ocean… for a good cause!
Local market niches, i.e. jewellery and artwork industries, may be offered a new income source by making use of the discarded non-venomous fins to make new products, while at the same time benefit the environment. It seems that it is not expected that natural predation of lionfish will be capable to buffer its invasion. Experience in the Caribbean has shown that the success and long-term sustainability of the removal response system is significantly enhanced by the availability of a market to utilise removed lionfish (Chapman et al., 2016).
Use of lionfish in cooking and jewellery makingThis video on lionfish uses was created through the RELIONMED-Life project. It explains that lionfish can be consumed when the venomous spines are removed and describes how you can create lionfish jewellery from the soft fins of the fish. It also mentions how to remove the spines of the fish safely and gives information on first aid in case of an accidental sting.
