24 Οκτωβρίου, 2021The European project RELIONMED-Life and the European Topic Centre on Climate Change Adaptation (ETC-CCA) of the European Environment Agency (EEA) have collaborated and published, on the 18th of October 2021, a case study titled “Preventing lionfish invasion in Cyprus through early response and targeted removal”. The article was published on the European Climate Adaptation Platform Climate-ADAPT that concerns examples of adaptations due to climate change. The platform is a result of the partnership between the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Commission (EC).
Wishing to explore maters on the adaptation in the Biodiversity, Marine and Fisheries sector, the Climate-ADAPT Platform presented the case study about lionfish and the RELIONMED project. The actions taken to sustainably manage the removal of lionfish with the participation and support of stakeholders and the public, meanwhile benefitting novel market opportunities, were considered by the platform as techniques used in the marine sector to adapt to climate change. The introduction, spreading and increase in abundance of this alien, marine, invasive species in the Mediterranean due to the warming of the sea classified the article under the Climate Impacts sub-section of “Extreme Temperatures”.
